After breakfast in the morning we drive to Nayapul
(48 km.) 1.5 hr by vehicle over via hilly ridges of
Lumle/kande and walk about 20 minutes to Birethanti,
a large and prosperous town. Beyond a pasture used
by pony caravans, the trail reaches Sudami where we
have Lunch. After lunch climb steadily up the side
of the valley, reaching Hile at 1495m near by Tikhedhunga.
Along the way various hamlets offer ample camping
possibilities but if Gorepani is the objective for
the next day it is better to push to Tikhe Dhunga.
Q/N at Tihke Dhunga.
Dhunga - Ghorepani (2848M)
Breakfast served in the morning around 7:am. From
Tikhedhunga the trail crosses a stream (Bhurungdi
Khola) on a suspension bridge to start the long steep
climb to the large Magar village Ulleri at 2070m.
Above the village where the trail climbs gently through
pastures and cultivated fields. There are magnificent
rhododendron and oak forest. Lunch spot in Nangethanti.
Thanti is a Nepali words meaning “rest house”.
In the winter the trail can be covered with show.
From Nangethanti about one hours walking to Ghorepani
at 2848m. Arrive at the top of the Ghorepani pass
and camp there. Q/N in Ghorepani.
- TatopaniI (2855m.). 6.30 hrs
Today we walk on the long descent into Kali Gandaki
canyon. Enjoy the cool quite of the forest as we descend
steeply through Chitre, Shikha and Ghara all of which
offers refreshment and a chance to rest your knees.
After about 6000 ft. of descend we cross we have our
first sight of the Kali Gandaki River, which we cross
to reach Tatopani. Tatopani consists several clusters
of building with excellent food, hot spring and nice
view of Nilgiri mountain. Sipping your beer as you
enjoy your soak, drinking in the lovely atmosphere
and surroundings of the riverside.
- Lete (1189-2855m) 6 hrs
Today we continue up the valley along the deepest
gorge at Dana than becomes progressively steeper and
narrow as the river becomes ‘younger’
when the river meets the Rupse Chhahra. There is a
spectacular waterfall and the Geology here changes.
Still we will continue north along the steep Cliffside
to Kabre then Ghasa. Ghasa (2040m) a sprawling flat-roofed
village, which contains tea shops and hotels is the
first Thakali village on the trek and it marks the
end of the subtropical vegetation and the beginning
of the conifer forests. From Ghasa, the trail climbs
steadily but not steeply, and it soon enters pine
forests, crossing a stream on a wooden bridge, and
climb up about 15 minutes we reach to Lete, which
is a wonderful place for staying overnight and Sunsets
from Lete are memorable.
- Marpha (2438m – 2667m) 6 hrs
The spread- out village of Lete, which then combines
into Kalopani. At Kalopani we cross the river where
it is narrow and back again over suspension bridge.
Aim to reach the pretty village of Marpha today. The
trail passes through the interesting Thakali village
of Larjung, Khobang and Tukuche. There are lots of
lodge to choose from. After walking about 1.30 hour
from Tukuche we finally we reach to a charming town
of Marfa where we pass by the Marpha Agricultural
farm, which has introduced new crops into the area.
- Kagbeni (2667m- 2800m)
From this point northwards a strong wind begins to
blow from about 10.00 AM onwards. So, aim to set out
early. The trail begins to enter the rain shadow caused
by the mountains and the tree becomes smaller. So
they are few and far between and scrub taken its place.
As we approach Jomsom the scenery changers again becoming
like desert. Jomsom is the center of Mustang that
contains several good hotels, bakery shops; army/
police check post, government offices. About three
hours walking along the valley we reach to Tibetan
pretty village of Kagbeni where we will stay overnight.
- Muktinath (2800m-3802m) and back to Kagbeni
Next morning without our heavy pack we head up east
away from Kali Gandaki River there are views to Muktinath
and Thorung Pass in the distance. We pass traditional
village of Jarkot where we may stop for lunch and
finally reach to Muktinath. Muktinath Temple is a
point of pilgrimage for Buddhist and Hindus where
flam, water, air meet. Enjoy the views from here before
returning to Kagbeni.
It takes only 3 hours to back to Jomsom. After having
Lunch we can stroll around Jomsom or hike up to the
next village crossing the Kali Gandaki village. Jomsom
